Bidirectional Detectors
A bidirectional detector (BD) is a component combining:
- Dual directional coupler; its output ports sample waves travelling in opposite directions in the main waveguide or coaxial transmission line.
- Detector in each of the coupler output ports.
- Optionally a DC amplifier in each of the coupler output ports.
As a result, a bidirectional detector provides two DC output voltages: one ideally proportional to forward (incident) power, the other ideally proportional to reverse (reflected) power. However, the transfer curves (voltage-power dependencies) are generally nonlinear and more or less vary with temperature.
Applications
Bidirectional detectors can serve for simultaneous sampling of incident and reflected powers, the difference of which yields the net power delivered to, and hence dissipated in load.
The devices can be fixed to a parent waveguide with screws after machining of appropriate holes in the broad waveguide wall. A precision parent waveguide can optionally be part of delivery.
